SOLD $110
VESPASIAN, (A.D. 69-79), AE as, Rome mint, issued A.D. 71, (9.456 grams), obv. radiate head of Vespasian to right, around IMP CAESAR VESPASI[AN AVG CO]S III, rev. [VICT]ORIA NAVALIS, SC across in field, Victory standing to right on prow, (cf.S.2355, RIC 503, C.632). Dark green patina, fine and scarce.
This rare reverse issue, was used by both Titus and Vespasian. It may refer to the naval victory as a result of the great naval loss by storm sustained by the Jews who had fled from Joppa to their ships when the town was attacked by Cestius. It otherwise may refer to the naval victory gained by the vessels of Vespasian over the barks of the Jews on the lake of Gennesareth. The victory was significant enough to be commemorated by both Vespasian and Titus on their coinage at various times during the reign.
