Q. POMPONIUS MUSA, (c.66 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.958 grams), obv. Apollo laureate head to right, crossed flutes behind head, rev. Euterpe, the Muse of Lyric Poetry, standing to right, holding two flutes (tibiae) and resting elbow on column, [Q]. POMPONI on left, MVSA on right, (S.355 [£165 VF], Cr.410/5, Syd.815, B. Pomponia 13). Slightly off centred, trace of mint bloom on reverse, otherwise good very fine and very rare.
The Musa types are always collected because of their association with the arts. Euterpe was the Muse of Lyric Poetry and is potrayed on this coin with her attributes. Only a few dies were utilised for this type according to the study by Crawford.
