ROMAN REPUBLIC, Anonymous (Aes Grave) Series, (c.240-225 B.C.), Rome mint, AE semis, (175 grams), obv. Saturn head to left, S below, rev. prow of galley to right with S above; (S.574 [£500 VF], Cr.35/2, Syd.73). Attractive brown patina, good very fine and rare in this condition.

The issue has been down dated to 225-217 B.C. by Crawford. The high weight of this piece (normally about 132 grams), suggests a very early issue for this series as known examples come up almost to this weight.
