Estimate $200
Bid at live.noble.com.au
SOLD $180

JUDAEA, Roman Administration, Domitian, (A.D. 81-96), AE 25, Caesarea mint, (11.47 grams), issued to Commemorate Roman Judaean victory, of A.D. 69, obv. [DOMITIANVS] CAES AVG GERMANICVS, laureate head to left, rev. Minerva advancing to left, holding trophy in right hand and shield and spear in left, (H.749 [188]; Mesh.II, Sup. VIII, 7; S.886). Attached dirt patina, otherwise very fine and very scarce.

This example is one of those issued locally in Caesarea to commemorate the 'Roman victory' but as Domitian took no part in that war and seems unlikely that he would issue coins to commemorate Titus' victory over Judaea has lead some scholars to believe that it is actually an ordinary issue of the Roman administration in Judaea. Hendin believes the issue to be part of the 'Judaea Capta' series issued locally.
