IONIAN ISLANDS, Chios, (478-431 B.C.), silver drachm, (7.83 grams), obv. Sphinx seated to left, amphora before, grapes above, on circular raised shield, rev. quadripartite incuse square punch, (S.4594, Baldwin 43d [same obverse die], BMC 6-11). Very fine and very scarce.

This series of coins has been the subject of a doctorate degree from Oxford University by Dr. Nicholas Hardwick.
