SOLD $420

REPUBLIC, M. Junius Brutus, (c.54 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (4.01 grams), obv. head of L. Iunius Brutus Cos 509 to right, BRVTVS behind, rev. head of C. Servilius Ahala Eq. 439 to right, behind AHALA downwards, (S.307, Cr.433/2, Syd.907). Nice toning, attractive style, nearly extremely fine and rare.

The type reflects the moneyer's admiration for those of his ancestors who were tyrannicides and this issue forms part of a pattern of consistent opposition to Pompey's real or supposed intentions. Brutus as early as 59 B.C. linked himself to his ancestors. This Brutus has passed into history as one of the conspirators who actively took place in the assassination of Julius Caesar.
