THE OVERLAND ROUTE TO INDIA - MEHEMET' ALI, AE 58mms, 1842, by A.J. Stothard, obv. Half facing bust to left of Mehemet' Ali, rev. ten line inscription, (Puddester 842.2 noted and extensive commentary but noted as not seen and only cited in D.Fearon BCM 293.9). Edge knocks and minor surface scratches, otherwise good very fine and rare.

It was Mehemet Ali, as Viceroy to Egypt, who had presented `Cleopatra's Needle' to Britain in 1819, though it was not erected in London until 1878.
