ATTICA, Athens, (406-404 B.C.), plated silver tetradrachm, (13.89 grams), obv. Athena head to r., wearing crested Athenian helmet, rev. owl facing body to right, olive twig behind, (Starr Pl.xxiii, 12, BMC 61, S.2535). Severe obvere and reverse test cuts, otherwise nearly fine.

ex. Glendinings Nov 8, 1979 (lot 268). This issue was an emergency issue at the end of the Peloponnesian War and is imortalised in Aristophanes play 'The Frogs', see Head 'Historia Numorum' p.373 for account of this interesting issue.
