JOHN III, (1222-1254), gold hyperpyron, Constantinople mint, obv. Christ enthroned facing wears nimbus, in hand the Gospels, rev. facing figures of the Virgin on right placing hand on head of John III on left wearing loros, who holds a long patriarchal cross, (S.2073, Hendy Pl.31,13-16). Clipped flan, nearly extremely fine.
