ex Glendining's 1964 for all except the first coin. The Zangids named after `Imid al-Din Zangi, who was the son of a Turkish slave, became the Chamberlain to the Seljuk ruler Malik Shah (A.H.465-485). Zangi was then appointed governor of Iraq in A.H.521 and he extended his sway over Mosul, Sinjar, Jezira, Harran and Aleppo during the course of a year. When he died his kingdom was divided between two sons Nur al-Din Muhmad who had Syria and Sayf al-Din Ghazi who had Mosul, (he did not strike coins), (died A.H. 544), but his successor Qutb al-Din Mawdud issued coins including pictorial dirhams (next lot).
