ARTUKIDS OF HISN KEYFA AND AMID, Rukn al din Modud, (A.H. 619-629) (A.D. 1222-1232), copper dirham, pictorial type, citing Ayyubid overlords, Amid mint, dated A.H. 621 = A.D. 1224-5, obv. small two headed eagle within circle, legends around, rev. Al-Malik and al-Kamil with central circle, (A.1824, M.1115-6, S/S 19, Edham 20-22, BMC 358-360). Off centred, weak in places, otherwise nearly very fine and rare.
These Artukids founded a principality in 495 when Sukman was appointed Governor of Hisn Kayfa. From 496 until 502 he also governed Maridin until his brother Al Ghazi was appointed to Maridin. The district of Amid was added to this principality by Saladin in 579 when his suzerainty was acknowledged. His nephew suppressed this Artukid principality in 629. The above coin was the last issue type and date from this principality.
