GROUP OF FOUR: Military Medal and bar (GVR); 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal. 178 Sgt G.Drane 13/Aust L.H.R. All medals impressed. Mounted for wear. Very fine.

Sgt. Gordon Drane born Loy Yang, Victoria. MM:C.G.17Jun1919 'For conspicuous gallantry in action. On 30th August 1918 Sgt. Drane was sent forward with a patrol to reconnitre certain positions and get contact with the enemy. Owing to very heavy N.G. fire, he dismounted his party, pushed on alone, and gained the necessary information. He then established an observation post and remained till dusk. Apart from sending back valuable information regarding movements of the enemy he greatly assisted the troops on the left to conform with 3rd Aust.Divn. line (owing to his gallantry and initiative under fire obscurity of the position of the troops on the left was quickly and effectively cleared up. His work throughout was of the highest order and by his fearlessness and devotion to duty he set a splendid example to those under him'. *Bar C.G.10Oct1919 'On 7/9/18 in connection with fighting north of Etreillers this N.C.O. was sent with a patrol of two men to ascertain the position of French troops on the right of the 32rd Division. Sgt Drane carried out the mission himself, at great personal risk through heavy artillery fire. He handled his patrol in a most capable manner and through his agency, the patrol did not suffer any casualties. He set a splendid example to the men under him. This N.C.O. has previously been recommemded for his excellent work in connection with operations west of Peronne'. Together with Anzac medallion (cased) and lapel badge, R.S.L. Life member's badge, studio photograph of the recipient (copy) and research. An exceedingly important and extremely rare double decoration to an Australian Light Horse Regiment. Only two MM and bars awarded to the Light Horse.
