BANK OF VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, Hobart Town, one pound, dated 1 July 1881, not numbered, proof, unsigned, stamped SPECIMEN, on card, no watermark, imprint of 'Perkins Bacon & Co. London Patented Hardened Steel Plate', vignette on left, of farming scene and distant ships, and ornamental oval tablet with ONE on upper right and ONE in rectangular tablet lower left, all within rectangular ornate spiral border, states below, 'We promise ..... For the President & Company of the Branch', black on white, (Vort-Ronald, Type three, comments on bank and type p.108-112, similar note but £5 illustrated Fig. 118 [p.112], no examples from bank in the Spink Perkins Bacon Archive sale). Heavy folds in six places, small holes and tears at folds, a complete note, otherwise very good - fine, rare.
The Dr. Nicholson collection had an undated issue probably issued earlier than this dated example.
