FREE WATERMAN BADGE, Thames, City of London, c1820s, in a silver plated tin layer applied over pressed bronze plate (oval and arched 115x120mm), features City of London's arms over a plaque in which is engraved the licence number, '3614', below is the arms of the Free Watermen, the badge was worn as a brassard by being sewn to the sleeve of the waterman's coat. Extremely fine and rare.
Badge No.3614 was issued to James Charles Upton on 24 June 1809, see article in The Australiana Society, Australiana magazine, Vol 29 No 1, February 2007, Licensed Boatman badges by Les Carlisle.
