PAINTING OF THE CONVICT TRANSPORT 'CHARLOTTE', gouache, 70cm x 50cm, by Philip J.Gray. Framed and glazed.

The painting depicts the 'Charlotte' (foreground) and H.M.Ship 'Sirius' in Port Jackson,1788. The 'Charlotte' was one of several merchant ships employed into naval service to form what we know as the 'First Fleet' which arrived in Botany Bay, and a little later Port Jackson, N.S.W. in January 1788 carrying convicts. Lightly armed with only six small cannons, the 'Charlotte' was not a warship, but rather a purpose built merchant cargo vessel of 345 tonnes, 105 feet long and 28 feet beam. She was built on the Thames in 1784. On board were 88 male and 20 female convicts. The artist has exhibited widely in the traditional maritime genre, and works have sold in Australia, America and the United Kingdom. Some of his works are held in the Latrobe Library, whilst others were released as limited edition prints.
