IPSWICH, J. Conder's penny, 1795 by John Milton, bust of Cardinal Wolsey left/ancient gateway (D&H 9) extended die break or flaw, from rim at base to forehead. Dark blue and red brown patina, nearly uncirculated and extremely rare, said to be only 4 struck.

Ex W.J. Davis, F.S. Cockayne, T.A. Jan II (lot 60) and F. Schwer Collections (June 1984). James Conder the issuer of these private tokens wrote the first full catalogue of the 18th century, token series, published at Ipswich in 1798. It was the collector's handbook until superseded by James Atkins's work published in 1892. His name lives on by way of collectors in the U.S.A. who refer to the series even now as the 'Condor' token series and many enthusiasts belong to the Conder Token Collector's Club based in Minessota.
