ANGLO SAXON, Wiglaf, (827-840), Ashmore replica of the silver penny, cross and pellets, rev. moneyer's name in three lines, (cf.S.934, Bulletin on Counterfeits Vol.20/2 No.22 (illustrated p.26 same dies). Nearly extremely fine.

Ex Doug Carian, Palmerston North coin dealer, New Zealand. First published by Bob Forrest in Coin News in October 1995 and again in the 1995/6 Bulletin on Counterfeits. Trevor Ashmore was a precision engineer by profession who in the late 60's started to cut dies in his free time. He sold these copies as replicas. In 1972 he set up a firm 'Period Coins' and these produced boxed sets of Medieval coins which included this example of Wiglaf. About 100 of the sets were sold mainly in the U.S.A. The business failed in 1974 but he continued to make replica coins. They all come toned and struck in good silver. Some types of his extensive group of copies (from Celtic to Civil War issues) were continued to be made into the 1990's.
