'For conspicuous gallantry in an attack on Wessel's commando in September, in charging a donga from which the enemy was firing heavily.' Together with extract from 'The Colonials in South Africa 1899-1902'. 'Lieutenant Thomas Thompson was the son of Thomas Thompson, of Hillside, Pakenham, Victoria, Australia. He was educated at a private school in Victoria, Australia, and served a year with the Victorian Rangers, two years with the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and twenty months with Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. He served in the South African War of 1899-1902; was mentioned in Dispatches; received the King's Medal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order {London Gazette, 19 April, 1902}: 'Thomas Thompson, Lieut., Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa.' The Insignia was sent to the Commander in-Chief in South Africa, and presented by Colonel Ternan at Spitzkop 8 Jan. 1902. Mr Thompson's favourite recreations were cricket and racing.'
