DSM: L.G: 13 September 1915. 'For service in submarines in the Sea of Marmora'. On 27 April 1915, in the Sea of Marmora, Dardenelles Lieut. Commander E.C. Boyle,R.N. in command of submarine E14, dived his vessel under enemy minefields and in spite of great navigational difficulties from strong currents and the presence of hostile patrols waiting to attack, continued during the next two weeks, to operate in the narrow waters of the straits and succeeded in sinking two Turkish gunboats and one military transport. Lieut Cmdr Boyle was awarded the Victoria Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal was awarded to each member of the ship's company. Together with photo of group, copy of relevant London Gazette; research and extracts from Australian official war history relating to H.M.A.Submarine AE2, which operated with E.14 in the Sea of Marmora.
