JAPAN. Siege of Port Arthur (Russo-Japanese War 1904-05) octogonal medal in bronze (70mm) by Hugo Taglang, Vienna, 1912, obv. bust of General Noghi, with inscription 'Comte Noghi' and Japanese characters, rev. lion on a cliff overlooking Port Arthur, with inscription 'Port Arthur' and Japanese characters. Cabinet friction on medal, nearly extremely fine and rare.

On 2nd January 1905 General Maresuki Nogi's force captured Port Arthur, Russia's chief base in the Far East together with the bulk of the Russian Far Eastern fleet and the survivors of General Anatoli Stossel's defending force. This ended an eleven month siege and opened the way for Japan's total defeat of Russia.
