GROUP OF FOUR: Distinguished Service Order (VRI) (DSO); Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 2 reverse with partial ghost dates), - four clasps - Cape Colony, Rhodesia, Orange Free State, Transvaal; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. The first medal unnamed, Lieut. H.B.Christie N.S.W. C.B.C., on second medal, Lieut. H.B.Christie. on last two medals. Second medal name engraved, unit impressed, last two medals impressed. Court mounted, very fine - nearly uncirculated.

General Orders by Major General R.S.S.Baden Powell, Commanding Frontier Force, Rustenberg, 19 July 1900; Gallantry; 'Lt H.B.Christie, 1st (N.S.W.) Regiment, who, when out with a patrol which was surprised by a party of Boers near Maguto Pass on July 18th, stayed with a man whose horse was shot and brought him out of fire, his shoulder being dislocated in so doing.' MID: LG 16/4/1901, p2607, posn 13. General Baden-Powell publicly thanked Colonel Airey and the Australian Bushmen for the dash and gallantry displayed during these engagements. One of the small group of seven singled out for special mention was Lieutenant H.B.Christie. Henry Bertram Christie, born 30Apr1863 in England; 1883 3rd South Staffordshire Regt; 1900 Citizen Bushmen Contingent to South Africa; transferred to South African Constabulary 03Oct1900; returned to Australia; Enl.16Apr1915 in Remount Service RASC (address for correspondence given as Warrigal Club, Sydney, NSW; appointed Second Assistant Superintendent with temporary rank of Lieutenant 19May1915 at Remount Depot; Died 09Dec1916 in France. With research including a typed copy of a 4-page letter by H.B.Christie dated 13 August 1900 giving a detailed account of his military service in South Africa.
