LEAD FORM TOKEN, British 18th century (?) found at Ohawe Pa, round (19mm) lacquered, good fine.

Ex Allan Sutherland Collection. Ten were found in 1951 by Guy Livingston, grandson of James, founder of "Republic of Hawera", and were given to John Brimblecombe who in turn gave five of the ten found to Allan Sutherland in 1967. These were found at a fortified pa on the Waingoro River at its mouth at Ohawe. In 1834 British army and navy men landed near this spot to recover Mrs Guard of the wrecked vessel "Harriet" after HMS Alligator shelled nearby Waimate Pa. Again in 1860 British soldiers were stationed here, a river frontier line in the Maori wars.
