CHINA, Chou Dynasty, Warring State period, (475-221 B.C.?), ancient round coinage, large coins 43mm diameter, obv. Yuan, (Sch. 74, TFP 357, Coole 8870-8890). Heavy green oxidation, otherwise very fine and rare.

Coole believes this coinage is the oldest round coinage from China and it was issued soon after Ch'i T'ai Kung relinquished his appointment at the Imperial court and came about him organising a mint to cast round coins in Ch'i, following from the laws of 1103 B.C., (p.xiv & p.1).
