SOLD $300

MADRAS PRESIDENCY, Indian Style Coinage, Hindu System, Gold pagoda, c.1643-1677, Struck at Fort St. George (Madras) mint, (3.35 grams), obv. very crude figure of a deity (probably Hanuman the monkey god of Vijayanagar), rev. plain, (Pr. 1 var., KM. -). Good very fine, very rare.

Ex. Glendining's Nov. 21, 1974 (lot 423). $$ Pridmore did not have an example of this type from Madras in his collection. The obverse figure is very uncertain and if anything is closer to a gorilla than a monkey.
