DENARIUS ROME MINT (STRUCK 88 A.D.) Obv. Laureate head right Rev. IMP XIIII COS XIIII CENS PPP Minerva standing left with thunderbolt and spear, shield at feet (RIC 109;C.234;Sear -). Very fine.

Under Domitian, a new emphasis was given to the traditional cults, especially those of Jupiter and Minerva. Minerva, Domitian's favourite goddess, was patroness of arms and letters, a fitting protectress for an emperor who aspired to success in both fields.
