GROUP OF SEVENTEEN:- Companion of the Order of the Bath; Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George; Commander of the Royal Victorian Order; Queen's Sudan Medal 1896; Queen's South Africa Medal 1899 - seven bars - Belmont - Modder River - Relief of Kimberley - Paardeburg - Drie Fontein - Johannesburg - Diamond Hill; King's SOuth Africa Medal - two bars - South Africa 1901 - South Africa 1902; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal (M.I.D.); Silver Jubilee Medal 1935; Coronation Medal 1937; Legion of Honour - Breast badge in gold an enamels (France); Order of The Crown - breast badge in gold (Italy); Khedive's Sudan Medal - one bar- Khartoum; Order of the White Eagle - neck badge (Serbia); Order of the Rising Sun - third class neck badge (Japan); Order of the Star with Swords - neck badge (Roumania); Order of the Crown second calss - breast badge and neck badge (Thailand). Brigadier General B. Buckley - Northumberland Fusiliers and British Intelligence. Fourth, fifth, sixth and thirteenth engraved, sevent and eighth impressed, all others unnamed. Enamel damage on Roumanian order otherwise food very fine.

All monted in glazed display case with name polate with detailed research, photographs of recipirnt and obituary. Basil Buckley was present as a Lieutenant with the 1st Bn Northumberalnd Fusiliers at the battle of Omdurman in September 1898. He went to the Boer War in 1899 and saw extensive active service at many of the major actions. Mentioned in despatches by Lord Roberts (L.G. 10 9 00) 'For special and meritorious service with the Mounted Infantry'. Brevet of Major in the 'Special Promotions' list of 20 2 01. He was a member of the Mounted Infantry Company that was sacrificed in acting as a rear guard at the famous action at Sannah's Post in March 1900. Buckley was captured but reluded his guards, secured a pony and effected his escape riding bare-back. Prior to World War One the passed Staff College and qualified as an interpreter in German and French. One report of his career in the first half of World War One simply notes that 'the particular value of his services at the War Office for long precluded his being spared for active service overseas.' Recent research has recealed that Buckley was one of the founders of British Military Intelligence in Section C of MO2 that was reorganised as MI2 in 1916. MI2 was the most important branch responsible for Intelligene concerning Germany and Austria Hungary. In early 1918 he took over the Egyptian Intelligence section. The CB and CMG plus the many foreign awards were an acknowledgement of Buckley's great contribution to the success of British Intelligence. Buckley was a member of H.M. Bodyguard, The Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms 1922 to 1952.
