Sale 112A Preface

Welcome to Sale 112 being held over three-and-a-half days commencing at 4.30pm on Monday 25th July. This catalogue, 112A, contains sixteen sessions and catalogue 112B, the Dr George Fenton Collection, comprises the entire twelfth session starting at 7.30pm Wednesday 27th July.

The highlights of this auction include the Dr George Fenton Collection of Australian Coins, 1910 – 64 and the series of forty lots of patterns and proofs of Australia headed up by the finest known 1914H Birmingham Mint proof florin (PCGS PR66) and followed by 1934, 1935, 1938 complete proof sets, some emanating from the H.G. Williams’ estate. Williams was a Dunedin, New Zealand dealer who motivated the Melbourne Mint to produce a quantity of proofs for collectors to purchase in 1934 and 1935. Further highlights are two New South Wales holey dollars and four dumps, two cracked die Adelaide pounds and four second type Adelaide pounds. Later Australian gold includes an important series of Imperial half sovereigns.

The ‘Hannibal’ Collection of Siculo Punic and Carthaginian Coins being offered in the fourteenth session, commencing at 11.30am on Thursday 28th July, is one of the finest and most important in private hands anywhere in the world. Highlights are two Dido tetradrachms, a dodekadrachm, a hexadrachm and a tridrachm with elephant reverse. This collection is preceded by a small group of choice Roman aureii.

British and World coins include a choice proof Gothic crown 1847, a proof half guinea of 1787 and the Chinese silver dollars from the R. G. Kaldor Collection.

Banknotes comprise the session with World notes in the fifteenth session at 2.30pm on 28th July, featuring some rare Chinese issues including the National Bank of China 1921 series. New Zealand notes follow in the sixteenth session with several rare Trading Bank issues and a fifty pounds of Lefeaux from the Warren Palmer Collection. Finally the Australian section includes several rare private bank issues and a complete series of pre-decimal star notes.

Orders, Decorations and Medals span the fifth session beginning at 2.30pm on Tuesday 26th July and are highlighted by the inclusion of a trio to Leading Seaman Gordon Corbould of the submarine AE1 that was lost in German New Guinea in 1914 at the beginning of World War I. Also featured is an AFC group for Korea awared to Squadron Leader J K McDonald who post-war participated in Operation Westbound, an historical ‘Around the World Flight’ of three Lockheed Neptunes in 1957. In 1959 he was killed during a test flight.
